For current 6th and 7th grade families:
The COMP provides music tutors to income-challenged students from our middle school instrumental ensembles (Band and Orchestra), who would not otherwise be able to take private instruction on their instrument. These lessons aim to help students to feel connected, supported, and successful in their school music ensembles. This year we will continue to hold these lessons directly after school at one of Ann Arbor's Middle Schools (unless otherwise arranged). Our partnership with the Community Music School of Ann Arbor provides us with reliable professional private teachers. In order to take advantage of this opportunity, please complete the form given to you/your child by Ms. Chappell and return by May 1, 2019. We will then determine your eligibility and contact you directly. If you are selected for this honor, lessons will begin in October of 2019. Students will be asked to give their professional tutor $5 per lesson to help defray the full cost. The partnership will pick up the balance. If you have any further questions, please contact Ms. Chappell directly! The 6th grade Orchestra concert is coming up on Wednesday, January 23! Also performing at the concert is the 6th grade band and the 7/8th grade choir. Here are the details:
Date: Wednesday, January 23 Time: 7pm, call time for students 6:30pm Location: STEAM Multipurpose Room Performer Attire: Black dress clothing Please email Ms. Chappell if you have any questions! See you at the concert! Order forms for Orchestra spirit wear have been handed out! There are extra forms in the orchestra classroom, and on the "Extracurricular Opportunities" page of this site.
Order forms and payment are due by Wednesday, January 30. Checks can be made to the Northside PTO. Winter break is called a "break" for a reason, but does that mean your instrument shouldn't come out of its case for two weeks? Ms. Chappell truly does understand that this time of year can be busy and practicing may be not the only thing on everyone's minds. Also, it is important to rest and recover. However, if you are home over break for at least a little while, practicing should be on your to-do list. Middle school students have concerts and scholarship auditions soon after the new year begins, and in order to be properly prepared, practicing is important. Do a little each day and it will get you far! Need more guidance for home practice? See your grade-level page for more specifics, or consult the "how to practice at home" PDF on the parents page. Plus, playing a "concert" for your family and friends is a great way to practice your performance skills! I hope your families have a restful and enjoyable winter break!
I also wanted to make you aware of a couple of opportunities for camp scholarships and give a few reminders regarding upcoming events. Here they are in list form: -AAPS Summer music camp scholarship auditions will be held at Huron High School on February 23. If you and your child are interested, please sign up for an audition slot NO LATER THAN Friday, DECEMBER 21. More information at https://www.a2schools.org/site/default.aspx?PageID=9703 -Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp will be at STEAM on Wednesday, February 6. Students will have the opportunity to audition for a scholarship during their class time. -Solo & Ensemble is on Saturday, February 9. Performance times and additional details will come out once I receive the information from the state office. Currently, all ensembles have music, and soloists should ensure they are practicing solos and are arranging rehearsals with an accompanist as the event gets closer. -Orchestra night is Tuesday, February 12. A detailed email will be sent once we return from break. Combined rehearsal dates with A2 Open will be Wed. January 30 at STEAM, and Monday, February 4 at Open, in addition to the day of the concert. An 8th grade Orchestra parent is organizing a performance event at Glacier HIlls Assisted Living. This is a great opportunity for your child(ren) to volunteer and give back to the community! Here are some basic details regarding the performance, and from there you can decide whether your child/family would like to participate.
What: Chamber Performance for Senior Citizens and community members Where: Glacier Hills Assisted Living, held in the Life Enrichment Center (pavillion building B) 1200 Earhart Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48105 When: Concert will begin at approximately 4-4:10pm on Monday, December 17. Students/families will need to head to Glacier Hills immediately after school. Why: To give students a unique performance opportunity, and to give back to the Ann Arbor community. How: Because this is NOT a school- sponsored event, families should make the decision as to whether or not their child may be transported to Glacier Hills by another family (AAPS is not liable for anything that may occur in transport of children/instruments to or at this event) or are able to transport themselves. Our classes are currently preparing chamber music, and students may play what they have prepared in class at Glacier hills. Music is a wonderful gift we can give to all people, especially those whom we cannot communicate with in other ways. Thanks to you and your child for help making this concert possible!
